Nadja & Friends Fraser Trailblazer Tour

Fraser Island

Awesome Island Adventure

Saturday:

We left in the morning at 8 o`clock at the Koala. We were nine people who enjoyed the whole weekend together. We went driving on an awesome 4WD- track and we had a lot of fun in the car. Also the tour guide made funny statements during the whole tour.

The first stop was at Rainbow Beach for buying alcohol and different things for the journey.  With a ferry we crossed  the pacific from Rainbow Beach to Hook Point.  We tried to take pictures of  the dolphins, who were jumping out of the sea.  On Fraser Island we drove along the beach to the beach house. We stayed at the base camp FRASER TRAILBLAZERS for one night. It was so nice because we slept in big tents, but under a roof  and we didn`t get wet.  At the camp was a big living room with TV, kitchen and tables for having nice meals.

On Saturday afternoon we went to Lake Wabby. Wetook a short walk around 30min. The first part was in the rainforest and the last part was through a little desert. The lake was sooooooooo beautiful. Sometimes you can see turtles in the lake. We were swimming all together in the lake. We swam from the beach to a little sand island  across the fresh water lake.  It was raining but  we had a good time in the water.  It wasn`t hot, it was the right temperature and weather to relax in nature.  After that we drove on the track through the forest to visit the famous Maheno Shipwreck.

The next stop was Eli Creek.  This is a river where you can swim from inland to the beach shore.  On the same tour we saw the Pinnacles.  They have such a nice colour.  This Saturday trip was finished and we went back to the base camp.  After that the tour guide cooked a delicious dinner for us: Aussie BBQ with quality Beef Steaks, Sausages, taste of kangaroo and variety of salads. With full stomach we listened to the stunning music from Nadia. We decided to go to the pub for dancing. The pub was awesome:  it had a great dance floor, a pool table, a swimming pool and a lot of space for having a party.

Sunday:

In the morning we were strolling in the rain forest. It was a relaxed walk and we rechargedour batteries. Before lunchtime we were visiting the Lake Birrabeen. It was a great feeling with the white sand and the sun. We went back to the base camp for having lunch. After lunch time we were packing all our stuff and put it on the top of the car. We took the ferry back to Rainbow Beach and were planning to take the highway back home but the rain flooded the roads of the town Gympie so we were “forced” to take the beach way home. No one complained.

Week 1 Pool Volleyball Comp Results

March 9, 2010 · Leave a Comment

GV Students cool down in Week 1 Volleyball competition at Nomads.

5 Teams of five strolled to the local pool at Nomads to compete against each other in five rounds of pool volleyball to win the weekly bar tab and major tour prize to be given away at the final games on Monday April 19 2010.

Other students decided to support their teams and came along to watch the excitement.  Our teams unfortunately were beaten by the backpacker team on the day, although it was a close win.  Daniel did fill in for the backpacker team and won a global prize.

Every Week Nomads will be giving away a $50 Bar tab so for all those thirsty drinkers perhaps you should put together your winning team.

In week 3 there will be no game because of Easter Weekend.

In week 6, the finals will present the winning team with awesome tour prizes for each team member courtesy of Nomads.

Monday was so much fun a great way to spend the afternoon with your friends and other Global Village Students.  Come along and enjoy the game!

If you are interested in joining Week 2 Pool Volleyball, sign on at the Activities Board or see Nadia at Activities Desk.

Vagabond Plays Guitar

February 24, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Playing cards with a bunch of Canadian strangers at Koala’s was how I found myself spending time before familiar faces from GV rocked up to party.

Not ony did they kick my butt every deal, the Canadian boys confessed their hidden talent of musical flair.  I thought to myself, if they played guitar anything like the way they played cards then they must be good!  So, I invited the boys to share their music with us at GV.

The next morning Brian showed up on his own.  I took one guess at why the other two lads, Ryan and Nick weren’t there – Koalas!  Hangover!  So Brian turned out to be the most courageous after all.

Brian wooed the women with his heartfelt tunes and happy traveller appearance. His mesmerizing voice could have had us sitting there for hours.  When I asked Brian to play a really sad song he pulled out old Blues number ‘My girl’.  You may remember a Kurt Cobain version?  Anyway, Brians version was just as good sending shivers all down my body.

Thank you for your entertainment Brian!  Happy travels around OZ!

Victory for Victor!

February 16, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Victor wins by a long shot.

Yesterday the lads got together for a tee off in the common room.  Five rounds were played against twelve competitors with a prize up for grabs.  Even though Mishary was in pro form it was Victor who set the standards.  With a score of Zero after five rounds, GV Golfers will need to spend less time playing ping-pong and more time on the common room golf course to win against the Victor Tyrant.

If we get enough interest we’ll be taking this out on the real course and for the amateurs, a game of putt-putt mini golf.

Celebrity Heads for a Chuckle

February 10, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Today a group of professional celebrity head players got together in Room 1 at GV Noosa.

CONGRATULATIONS to Corrine (winner of round1) and Ahmed (winner of round 2).

Turned out Nadia was the ‘Silly Sausage’ at the end of round one having been slaughtered by the effortless guessing from other celebrity heads.  She didn’t feel so bad in round 2 when Hamide took the role as a ‘Turkey’.

In Australia we can tend to call somebody a’ silly sausage’ or a ‘turkey’ as a friendly joke if somebody has acted not so brightly.  We all had a good laugh and enjoyed our time having fun and getting to know each other.

New words of the day: Pillow & Fence.

A Little Self Defence Never Hurt Anyone…Except Hugo

February 3, 2010 · Leave a Comment

There was a lot of interest in the self-defence activity today, as almost 50 students jostled for space in the common room. Chris gave the group an introduction to Tae Kwon Do, concentrating on ways to escape an attack.

Special thanks to Dennis from Korea who is a black belt and assisted the group with learning some basic moves. Dennis was once a bodyguard for a famous Korean actor! Well done Dennis. We would also like to thank Hugo from Brazil for putting himself in harm’s way by allowing Chris to demonstrate on him.

Best Beaches in the World

January 28, 2010 · Leave a Comment

After a game of beach volleyball, the best way to cool down is to have a quick swim. Then spend some time in the sun to work on your tan. Noosa Main Beach is perfect for just lying around and when it gets too hot, the protected water of Laguna Bay is a refreshing 25 degrees. These Swiss students were soaking up the summer sun yesterday at Main Beach after calling an early finish to their volleyball game.

Can you play table tennis with 14 people on 1 table?

January 12, 2010 · Leave a Comment

Yes, of course. Just get everyone to stand around the table and rotate anti-clockwise taking turns at hitting the ball. When there are lots of players and only one table this game allows everyone to play without the need to wait for your turn. Students tell us that this style of play is quite common throughout Europe. Thank you for sharing this fast-paced technique with us here at GV Noosa!

English and Surfing…and Lifesaving

December 1, 2009 · Leave a Comment

English and Surfing student, Nicolas Brengard saw an elderly lady caught in a rip last week so he paddled over and helped her to safety. The lady was extremely grateful for Nicolas’ quick actions and later gave him a gift to show her appreciation.

Nicolas trims accross a nice little left

Just another example of how important it is to swim between the flags. Even when the surf looks small, there can still be dangerous rips and currents.

Surfing Etiquette- What you need to know

November 26, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Surfers come from all around the world to enjoy the perfect waves that Noosa has to offer, here is everything  you need to know and remember, if you need help with the English, ask one of the GIL teachers.

1. Firstly, and most importantly, don’t drop in on other surfers. The surfer on the inside, closest to the curl, has the right of way -If you don’t see them and you drop-in, flick out as quickly as possible so you’re not in their way.

2. Give way. When you are paddling out, keep clear of surfers on the waves – if you can’t go around the shoulder, then go inside and duck-dive or roll under the white water.

3. Hold on to your board. Don’t throw your board away when a wave breaks in front of you and don’t paddle for the waves and then pull back. If you think the wave is bigger than what you first thought and you’re not comfortable, head back to the beach.

4. Know your own ability. If you are new to surfing and still learning, perhaps find a less-crowded spot to perfect the basic skills – just because there are lots of surfers in one spot and it looks good it dosen’t mean it will be the best spot for you.

5. Share. Don’t just paddle to the inside and take all the good waves – treat each other with respect and courtesy. If someone does something wrong, try to explain to them the right way. After all, surfing is all about having fun…like Lizzie.

Franks Gym (Noosa Fitness Centre) has very generously offered us a special promotional price exclusively for GV students.

GV students can buy a 12 week (3 month) membership for $149 (normal price is $349).  Franks is located about 2 minutes walk to the school, so there’s no better place to go for a work out.

Why not get a group together and get a regular afternoon exercise session going on?

You can check out the website at http://www.noosafitness.com/ , or better yet stroll down and have a talk to Corynne or Amanda.

On Wednesday, Out and About students discovered the delights of aromatherapy. During a fantastic hands on session at ‘Ezili’ (the Atrium, Tewantin) each student mixed his or her own personal spray-on blend of essential oils.

Students returned to G.V. Noosa with their chosen remedies; including potions to increase learning, relaxation, energy and passion! “Our hosts, Jo and Rachel, made everyone feel very special, and even spoiled us with juice and chocolate crackles for morning tea.”

Sailing on Laguna Bay… Very Nice

November 9, 2009 · Leave a Comment

On Friday, General English students got to sail catamarans off Noosa’s Main Beach. The larger than average swell size made it a little tricky getting out, and lots of fun coming back in.

Only one group managed to capsize their boat (twice) but they had it upright in no time. This week Cambridge students will have a chance to try sailing, see you there!
